13 Charming Brunch Spots in Surf Capital Biarritz

Nestled along France’s dazzling Basque coastline lies the chic beach town of Biarritz. Famously Europe’s oldest surfing destination, Biarritz charms with its belle époque architecture, lively surf scene, and year-round mild climate. On weekends, nothing beats fueling up for a day of activities at one of the town’s cozy brunch spots. Here are our top recommendations to dine like a local in the surfing capital.

1. Milwaukee Cafe

My partner and I were visiting from New Zealand on a cold, wet, and windy day. After being turned away from multiple nearby cafes that were only serving lunch, we ducked into Milwaukee in need of a warm cup of coffee.

Straight away the friendly staff greeted us with smiles, eager to take our order. In no time two hot drinks were in front of us, reviving us from the dreary elements outside.

It was refreshing to find a place so willing to look after cold and damp customers craving a pick-me-up between meal service. Too often cafes can be rigid with opening hours, but Milwaukee showed flexibility to serve us promptly.

With courteous staff and a cozy atmosphere, we were grateful for Milwaukee’s hospitality. Even on miserable days, a little Kiwi kindness from locals goes a long way. We’ll be sure to return on our next visit to the area.

A few friends and I popped by here unbooked for my birthday brunch and luckily snagged one of the outdoor tables. It was a nice little oasis – perfect for people-watching on a sunny day.

Ordering was simple, just tick your preferences on a slip of paper. I enjoyed building my bowl with various protein, veggie, and sauce options. Everything tasted fresh if a bit small in portion for my taste. My friends felt the mango wasn’t at its best – a bit mushy. But overall it was a relaxed meal in beautiful surroundings.

I appreciated the no-fuss, build-your-own concept for a casual weekend gathering. While perhaps not the most filling brunch, it’s a picturesque spot to start the day with friends. Next time I’ll make sure to book indoors for larger servings too. A very mood-lifting brunch experience overall.

3. La Rotonde

From the moment we stepped into this stately restaurant, I was taken by its sheer beauty – a stunning setting that calls for dressing up to the nines. The staff was so warm and welcoming (thankfully, as my French falls short). They clearly took pride in tending to every detail.

While the food was very good, I’ve had brunches elsewhere that pushed culinary boundaries a bit more. The dishes were nicely presented but perhaps lacked innovation.

That said, the overall experience was outstanding. Beginning our day in such elegant French countryside charm, after traveling from San Sebastian no less, really set the tone.

Minor quibbles with the menu aside, I’d highly recommend for the atmosphere alone. It’s a memorable way to feel pampered on a lazy Sunday. Perhaps dine in the evening when creativity in the kitchen may shine brighter.

4. Café du Commerce

Joining friends for dinner on a summer night without reservations, we luckily found space for four at this bustling local spot. The sights of piping hot pots of moules frites dotted around underscored its popularity.

Service was rapid-fire to keep up with the crowds, but always friendly. For our mixed choices, the confit de canard and entrecôte really stood out as classics done right. The burger filled the bill but wasn’t remarkable.

The linguine was decent though I questioned the Thai pairing alongside – the prawns leaning overcooked in that case. Overall it provided good value given the large portions and a reasonable wine list. No wonder our local friends rate this highly.

While creativity in the kitchen could be tightened up, as a buzzy, reliable choice for seafood and French comfort fare, this bistro delivers the goods night after night. I can see its enduring appeal for the neighborhood.

Visiting during the lunch rush, I was impressed by the swift and helpful service from all the staff. They seamlessly found us a table among the bustle. The food quality more than made up for waiting a bit. My wife raved about receiving an extremely generous portion of pork she simply couldn’t finish.

As for myself, the artichoke and chorizo starter absolutely blew me away with its bold yet balanced flavors. It ranks among the top tastes from our entire Basque Country trip.

This place delivers on both abundance and gastronomic excellence, even at the busiest times. Factor in the attentiveness of the bartenders and servers, and you have a sure bet for quality lunch or dinner in the area. No doubt it garnered its loyal following – we’ll be back too.

6. La Cantine

Despite nearing kitchen closure, the gracious staff at this Biarritz restaurant warmly welcomed us inside. We enjoyed vegetarian and vegan burgers bursting with flavors. The patty combinations were innovative yet satisfying. Desserts were equally creative and delicious.

But what most stood out was our waitress – so kind, attentive, and genuinely concerned that we enjoyed our experience. She took the time to ensure our meals met expectations. It’s clear this restaurant places as much value on service as the plant-based dishes. Even in a rush, they don’t slack on hospitality.

While perhaps not the largest menu, quality sustainable options, and caring staff more than make up for it. A worthy dining choice with an emphasis on both taste and treatment of customers.

Each afternoon I enjoyed strong coffee with a generous slice of cherry-topped gateau Basque, the perfect pick-me-up. The views across the street added to the relaxing vibe. But most memorable was the consistently attentive yet unfussy service from the male and female staff alike. Smiles and pleasantries accompanied each visit.

A cozy spot to escape the bustle yet still feel part of the street scene. Quality pastries and drinks, comfortable surroundings, friendly faces – it offered everything I wanted from an afternoon pause. No doubt I’ll be back the next time life brings me to Biarritz. This place becomes part of the very experience of visiting the seaside city.

What a delight to dine at Cafe de la Cote with our family of seven. As the pounding Atlantic waves provided a mesmerizing soundtrack, we enjoyed drinks during the day and watched an unforgettable sunset.

The award-winning food from this Biarritz institution did not disappoint. Standouts were fresh seafood dishes bursting with flavor, while children loved chicken served with chili accompaniments. Throughout our meal, the attentive staff made us feel taken care of. They seamlessly handled our large group.

Few places allow you to experience the coastal vibe of Biarritz like this stunningly located restaurant. To savor flavors from the sea against the dynamic backdrop of crashing waves and setting sun – it’s truly worth booking for the spectacle alone. Simply magnificent seafront views and a taste of Basque cuisine make this our top Biarritz recommendation.

With only a short time to explore breweries in Biarritz, I’m glad I stopped at this craft beer bar. They had a nice selection of beers to sample. I enjoyed a session IPA and a “milkshake” style brew – perfect refreshing sippers given the hot weather. Prices for a half pint were very reasonable too.

But what I most appreciated was the prime people watching terrace upstairs. Sitting out front on the busy walking street, it was great fun spotting locals and tourists passing by below.

Add in the central location just uphill from the beach, and it’s no surprise this place was hopping. The perfect respite after a day of sun and surf. Even with limited time, this craft beer bar shone for its selection, seating and central Biarritz spot. A worthy stop for those seeking brews in the coastal city.

I was pleasantly surprised by a unique fish dish paired with raspberry – simply delicious creativity. Everything was perfectly prepared. But what really stood out was the attentive yet understated service. Our server anticipated our every need before we knew we had them, like promptly refilling bread baskets.

And what views from the dreamy oceanside terrace! We’ll long remember the scenic sunset. Big thanks to the local who tipped us off. With quality food, intuitive service, and stunning coastal ambiance – this place delivers. Consider it our new favorite discovery in Biarritz.

Sitting surrounded by such opulence, I could almost imagine Proust scribbling away. The taste of croissants and pastries lived up to flawless presentation. Service was attentive but not overwhelming. The bathrooms upstairs added an artistic flourish to the experience. A must-visit to soak in Biarritz’s patisserie grandeur – a glittering relic of a bygone era.
